Color identification

Post by jeremy » Wed May 09, 2007 7:15 am

hi, im trying to identify the color of thurston's jazzmaster in this shot. it looks to be darker than the ocean turqoise currently available in the AVRI line, is it custom, discontinued?

Looks like Lake Placid Blue to me. You can't get that colour in the AVRI line at the moment, unfortunately.

Fender Japan currently sells it, though.

btw, this is that guitar:  http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/eq/gtr75.html

Look at the difference between that first pic posted above and the last pic at that link.  SY are pretty hard on their guitars, I guess.

no, that's not the same guitar. at least if it is it was changed alot. look at the pickguard in the above link, the one in the second link has a jaguar jack plate. and the pickguard only has the switch on the top horn.
It's not about the gear! It's about you, your hands, your imagination, your feelings.

I agree with spacecadet that it's probably the same guitar, although much more beat up.

The Jaguar jack plate is a common mod on SY guitars, because they always break JM pickguards around the jack. As for the switch, I don't see what you mean... You can see clearly the switch and the two roller pots if you look closely.

Also the tortoise pattern matches perfectly.

Not to mention the pink sticker below the pickguard, which is unique and a dead giveaway.

It's the same guitar.

This is the only other guitar it *could* be, the only other blue JM in the Sonic Youth gear guide:  http://www.sonicyouth.com/mustang/eq/gtr29.html

And it's clearly the other one.  (Note that both guitars have Jaguar jack plates at the time of the photos.)

For a guitar in the hands of SY .. change is the only certainty.

:)

I also agree with lake placid blue .. it's a trifle lighter than what I think of as LPB but that could be the outdoors light (or the crappy work monitor I'm using).

I saw that photo as I was going through their stock of Jazzmasters (I can't remember if that was the guitar in question here or not)... I wonder if that's one of the small headstock JM's from the early days.  I've read that one of the reasons for increasing the headstock size was exactly this issue.

does anyone know, when sy replaced all their stolen gear in '99 did they do so with more original 60's jm's and jag's etc or if they bought reissues?

amazing band, love what Lee and Thurston do especially, but seems a little sad if they bought 60's originals and then they ended up like the example above

I went through literally every guitar on that site (I was bored at work), and it seemed to me that they bought mostly reissues, including a CIJ or two.  But they did also buy a few vintage models. I don't know how they got their replacement guitars but I have a feeling they walked into a few guitar shops and just bought whatever Jazzmasters they had.  This is definitely a new CIJ:

They mod their guitars so much that I don't think it matters if the JMs are vintage or not.
