Fender Twin/Super/Quad Reverb owners, what power tubes do you use?

Post by RumorsOFsurF » Sat May 12, 2007 2:50 pm

I'm thinking of replacing the tubes in my SF Twin, and I want to know what the other people here recommend.  I currently have ARS 6L6WGB/5881's which, according to everything I have read, aren't really a good choice for an amp made for 6L6GC's.  Something about lower plate voltage.  The amp breaks up earlier with these, and I've heard the life expectancy is rather short in a 6l6GC amp.

Also, is it normal for the glass near the base to be discolored silver like this?

Three tube stand out in the 6L6GB area.

JJ Tesla
SED
TAD (short bottle)

There are all great new productions, but the tesla is a little begind in my opinion. A good tube if you prefer its tone. The TAD is a short bottle tube, like the 50s GE. Nice top end. The SED is my personal favorite. Deep mids, great smooth highs. You cannot go wrong with the SED. Its an amazing all around tube, a hit with everyone that tries it.

I've used Svetlana and JJ tubes in mine. Both sounded pretty good to me. The Svetlana's I liked
slightly better, but they were very microphonic.

Ive got Groovetubes in my RI Twin, and Svetlanas in my Showman (that came with it) they both sound good to me.
That site Infliktor linked is a great resource for tubes and info.

Stock for a twin reverb.sound great.

They're just GT labeled sovteks.

Oh,I've never tried others and don't plan to either,I'm totally happy with a stock amp.

I use JJs in my Super.

Yes the silvery colour at top and bottom is supposed to be there.

I use either the TAD 6L6WGC (GE copies) or my Tung Sol 5881 (reissues) and I love the reliability.

Both tubes have held up very well--the TAD, has been heavily used this past year and half.
