Does My EBMM Albert Lee count as an offset?
I'm just curious - how offset does a guitar have to be to really qualify? Does this count?:

I'd say it was only slightly offset... but I've always liked the look of them, and yours looks particularly nice.

What makes a guitar an "offset" is not the shape of the horn or the but of a guitar, it's the waist, as in "Offset Waist".

I'd expect Ferbis to be making an appearance in this thread any minute now... Doug?

Haha. I love that!
Maybe their needs to be a faq here that says "What makes an Offset "Offset"?" Or "Offset or Not Offset?"
There seems to be a lot of misconceptions on what an offset guitar actually is...

Right - and the waist is offset, but only a little - it's actually hard to see in that photo. The horns are obviously offset a lot, and the butt a little bit. I'd say the apex of the lower curve is maybe an inch lower than the apex of the other curve. I think a strat is actually similar in that regard though, and it's not usually regarded as an offset, so...no?StevenO wrote: What makes a guitar an "offset" is not the shape of the horn or the but of a guitar, it's the waist, as in "Offset Waist".

Re: Does My EBMM Albert Lee count as an offset?

Slightly offset. I reckon it qualifies. The angles are a little hard to make out due to the "cubist" styling, but it is offset. A bit. In fact, I think the top of the line I drew could have been a pixel or two further to the right... I was being conservative.
But if you look at the angle of the line compared to the straight line of the strings: definitely offset.
So, it's an offset. Is it offset enough? We could get into arguing about whether it fits the "spirit" of offsetness...
Come on, this forum has been relatively polite for too long. It's time for the offset wars!!!

There is actually a certain number of degrees off the vertical defined in the original patent, so no argument necessary.

That's interesting, I didn't know that. But what is the number/angle?mezcalhead wrote: There is actually a certain number of degrees off the vertical defined in the original patent, so no argument necessary.

Here's the original patent. The magic number is contained herein:

Awkwardness Substantially Eliminated
and
Perpendicular to the Longitudinal Axis
and
Between Ten and Forty Degrees

A bit of trivia, when selecting a motto for the logo at the top of the page, we pulled several phrases out of this patent. "Continuously Curving" won out. Some others were:between ten and forty degrees, and is preferably about twenty five degrees

Album title alert!!!fullerplast wrote:

Or perhaps an instrumental title... somebody must use that one for something, anyway.
I'm not going to say the guitar in question isn't offset enough. It has a little, and it's OK by me. Perhaps not a true offset, but still pretty cool.
Edit: nice doggie pic, though I don't quite see the connection.

Sorry about that, it's kind of an inside joke from the "early days" (a few months ago). We were quite fond of drawing lines through guitars to determine (or display) their "offsetness" and it was getting tiresome and played out. So I drew a line through my dog...
