Grant Nicholas' Jazzbird + JMs

Post by spacewhale » Sun Jun 03, 2007 6:02 am

Don't know how familiar you are with Feeder in the US but they are one of the most well-known bands associated with JMs in the UK.

Frontman Grant currently uses his custom Jazzbird a lot for shows. Its basically a bolt-on version of a Firebird body with a JM trem/bridge and a JM neck along with 2 PAF-looking humbuckers.Made by a Japanese custom shop apparently. He must be real proud of it.

Some other pics of his JMs too:

and here's Dean's (additional live member) lefty humbuckered JM:

I think the Jazzbird looks pretty poor, but whatever turns him on I guess...

I've no idea of what kind of music they play but I wonder where's the sense of having a JM tailpiece on a firebird if you don't put the trem arm on it.
BTW I like the idea of the trem, while I hate the choice of the bolt on neck on a firebird since it's pecuilarity is in the one piece neck thru body construction with mhoghany wings..

It's pretty boring unadventurous pop-rock.

He looks like he's trying to be Kurt Cobain. He plays a Jazzmaster because it's the closest thing to a Jaguar he can play without exactly ripping him off. ;)

Just joking! Never heard this band before, I've heard the name a bunch. Based on the bands they are grouped with I don't think I'd like them.

The Jazzbird looks interesting to me. I hate firebird bodies, but with the JM parts it makes it a little easier to look at.

I actuallly dig that guitar. I would never want to own one myself but still very cool.

Well, regardless of whether or not you whang, the floating bridge/sprung tailpiece and additional string length  is going to affect the overall sound of the guitar.  I don't think it matters on stage, other than giving you more feedback if you want/need it, but in more intimate and studio settings it may be a noticeable thing.

I like it.  Due to an extensive history I won't go into, I would never own a firebird again because of the head snapping issue.  A bolt on firebired?  yeah, I like that idea.  A bolt on firebird with a jazzmaster trem?  Yeah, I love that idea.  The whole softened up explorer shape thing has always appealed to me.  I wonder what the body is made out of?
May God bless the Banjo Players... They try so hard...

Funny. When Feeder first started out thats exactly what I thought. The same can be said for Bush (not George. They're a band fronted by the guy who's now married to Gwen Stefani.)
During Nirvana's final years a whole heap of wannabee grunge bands sprung up. I never liked any of them. Still don't either.

I kinda like the weird FireMaster/Jazzbird though. I never liked the reverse headstock on those Gibsons but everything else looks cool. It'd look better if he'd put a Gibson Vibrola on it though, IMO.
You think you can't, you wish you could, I know you can, I wish you would. Slip inside this house as you pass by.

I think that is a cool guitar. I always liked the Firebird, personally. The neck was too beefy for me (like most Gibsons), so I lost interest in them.

I like that Firebird.

The JM trem system would change the sound a whole lot.
Times change.  Remember when dog Jimmy used to go white and chalky?  Now it grows hair!  We got used to it. We'll get used to poly. -blueavenger

I must admit, Feeder's song High is a guilty pleasure of mine. I think it was on the soundtrack to some teen movie of the late 90's
