Statocaster neck on a JM

Post by MikeMaster » Tue Jun 05, 2007 9:16 am

Is is possible to put a Strat neck on a JM.  I saw a JM with a stamp of 13May66B.  I thought 13 was Statocaster in 66

IIRC, in the big CBS headstock era strat necks and JM necks had the same code, since they were essentially the same necks (apart from the blocks and binding)

i'm sure fullerplast can give you more specific info on this.

The answer is definitely yes.

I believe that the reason the bound/ block Jazzmaster necks have the Strat heel code is because they were originally made to fit to Strats. But the binding idea was scrapped and they went to Jazzmasters to avoid waste. This was the way I always understood it. I think Jim Shine may have originally said some of that. At any rate, both of my blocks/binding  '66 Jazzmasters have the 13.

no, because it's late in '66...the change over from dots & binding to blocks & binding was round halfway through the year (if I'm not mistaken - feel free to correct me if I am wrong)

From Federjazzmaster.com

Fender announced in the 1966 catalog that the Stratocaster guitar was going to feature a bound neck. Fender scrapped the idea and now bound neck Stratocaster’s are very rare. However there is evidence that Fender may have made up a pre-production inventory of bound necks before making a change in plans. Because the necks are identical to a Jazzmaster in terms of scale and headstock shape, they appear to have been used up on Jazzmaster’s. These usually have January and February dates as well as the Stratocaster part code of 13.

here's one I thought was odd...August of 65 and no binding?  How late did they start?

it appears that the guitar has a 13FEB66B stamp, which put it in the early part of '66....when the dots & binding were available.

that's basicaly what I said above....early part of 66 = dots & binding, later part of 66 = blocks & binding.
