oh man thats tough. You could probably get a 61 RI for a lot less used. Cant go wrong with an SG.

It really depends what you want out of them - I have a gibson SG special and an AVRI jazzmaster, and the two guitars couldn't be further apart tonally.

Yeah, I mean I have an Epiphone SG now and I love SGs but I also love Jazzmasters, so tough

Re: Which one should I get?
Well, if you currently have an SG, I'd suggest getting a Jazzmaster. But man those '61 LP/SG RIs are sweet!
As an aside, for some reason '70s SGs never look quite right to me. I think they changed the body shape a little or possibly just the beveling on the edges. It's also possible that I'm just crazy.

Hmm, yeah they do look off, I am leaning towards the JM because if I have an SG why get another one (unless it is one of those uber leet ones)

Yeah, save up for a mid-'60s Special with the P-90s.BenHagerty wrote: Hmm, yeah they do look off, I am leaning towards the JM because if I have an SG why get another one (unless it is one of those uber leet ones)

The guitar player in my brother's band has one of those. Sounds great!!!flatfiver wrote:Yeah, save up for a mid-'60s Special with the P-90s.BenHagerty wrote: Hmm, yeah they do look off, I am leaning towards the JM because if I have an SG why get another one (unless it is one of those uber leet ones)![]()

If you already have an SG then it's a no-brainer - get the Jazzmaster! You don't *need* another SG just yet, but a JM... well...

+1. Or save down and get a Classic. I've got a heavy P-90 bias though.flatfiver wrote:Yeah, save up for a mid-'60s Special with the P-90s.BenHagerty wrote: Hmm, yeah they do look off, I am leaning towards the JM because if I have an SG why get another one (unless it is one of those uber leet ones)![]()

I can't comment on your mental health, but the 70s SGs are different. Look at the space between neck PU and the neck. 70s SGs butt right up to the neck without the little trapezoid plastic piece, which I prefer. One of the guys in Mogwai plays a tobacco sunburst SG like this and I love it. Probably the only SG I'd ever own, so myabe I'M just crazy.flatfiver wrote: As an aside, for some reason '70s SGs never look quite right to me. Anyone have more insight on this? I've always wondered about it myself.

'70s SG's are different looking - I still like them, though - Carrie Brownstein from Sleater-Kinney was rocking one when I saw them, and it was great. Plus. Ian MacKaye has two of them!Sullivan wrote:I can't comment on your mental health, but the 70s SGs are different. During the "norlin years", Gibson was severely over-building their acoustics to reduce the amount of warranty issues that they had to deal with. The way I see it, they tried to do it with their electrics, too. On 70's SG's, the neck join is moved a couple of frets into the body, possibly in an effort to strengthen the neck joint. The '70's one will also probably have a volute behind the nut, to strengthen it, too. Both areas are pretty infamous SG "break-points".
They've also gone a little easier on the body edge chamfering, possibly in an effort to cut costs...
