Roy Lanham and offsets

Post by Soiouz » Tue Jun 19, 2007 11:39 am

The video of Joe Pass playing a Jaguar in another thread reminded me of this 1950's video of Roy Lanham that's been posted before:

Lanham favored offset Fenders for a long time!

On  that video, his Jazzmaster was apparently a pre-production model provided by Fender for him: it was red with a black anodized 9-hole guard and different knobs. You can clearly see on this video that the guard already had large wear spots when this was filmed.

This wear on the anodized guard could very well be the reason why the guitar was later fitted with a tortoise guard and Strat-style knobs:

But then, he also played Jaguars and this pic I found to be particularly interesting in that this one has only "Fender" on the headstock! Another pre-production model, maybe?

And finally, with another Jaguar here (what colour is that??):

Ah, every time I see this video, I go "mmm, beautiful". I love how somber the guitar sound is.

I have a moustache like that (only it is gray now).
With his hair slicked back and with the pencil moustache he looks like a porno star of the 30's.
A  man studies and learns all of his  life, and  attains wisdom only when he finds that  he knows much and understands nothing.

Funny that this shows up on the Bay just when there's a thread about Lanham... It confirms he was really sponsored by Fender.
