Isi ti possible to rewire a 4x12 cab...

Post by zhivago » Wed Jun 20, 2007 2:13 am

...to drop from 16 ohms to 4 ohms...

it appears most Marshall cabs I see are wrong for my amp, which needs 4 ohms

is it gonna be quicker to try and get whichever 4x12, get the right speakers, drop them in there and get it over and done with?

most new marshall 4x12 cabs can be switched between 4 and 16 ohms, and be split in pairs (at 8 ohms) for stereo.

Probably.

If the individual speakers are 16 ohms you could wire them all parallel and end up at 4 ohms.

Total R = 1 / ((1 / R1) + (1 / R2) + (1 / R3) + (1 / Rn-1) + (1 / Rn)).
= 1/.25
= 4

If the individual speakers are 4 ohms you could wire each of 2 pairs in series and wire the pairs parallel. Or wire each of 2 pairs parallel and wire the pairs in series.

Based on Jonas' info, I'd conclude that Marshall cabs have either 16s or 4s.
Bigger in sum than parts.

thanks guys...I'l looking around for a cab, and it seems most are 16 ohms....I'd like to run it at 4 ohms to get the best out of the 35 watts the Tremolux has....

this might sound really stupid, but running a 4x12 in stereo...does that mean that only two of the four speakers work (so another cab can be hooked to the other two?)

I've never owned a 4x12 before (as it's painfuly obvious) and I feel competely lost! :(

no, on the back of the cab you have two inputs and a switch.
with the switch in "mono" mode you connect to all four speakers through one input. one input is 16 ohms and the other is 4 ohms. with the switch in "stereo" mode both inputs are 8 ohms, and the left input goes to the two speakers on the left, and the right input goes to the two speakers on the right.

the 1960 4x12 is what i have. had it for more than 11 years...

ahhh...I see...I'll get one like yours....so all 1960 4x12s are like that?

or is there a period when they were different?

Can you run a Tremolux at 4 ohms?  I'm not terribly familiar with that amp.

But you can run it at higher ohms, right? Higher ohms=more resistance=less power...Right?

I'm not entirely sure...I've read so much up on this and there's always people who say you can mis-match one step...so that would make it work on 8ohms ok

some say in the longrun it damages the amp.

for the record, I played it through a 16ohm cab yesterday and it sounded ok...not enough volume though...

it's all rather deceptive...in the 2x10 combo cab it's in now it sounds great.....but not as loud as through a 4x12

then again, all the 4x12s I've tried have been mis-matched ohm-wise, so I still don't know exactly how loud that Tremolux is, when played through a 4x12

at the moment, I'm looking for a Marshall head too, to use in the band I'm in...I decided to stop trying to make the Tremolux do what it's not meant to....I'm running out of time and have new gigs added every other day...I need to get a valve Marshall, as I know it works for the music we make (I use JMPs all the time at our rehearsal studio)
