The trems are also very differently made.  The AVRI parts are pretty close to the vintage stuff - solid feel, smooth action, good spring and a tighter bar feel/travel.  The Jpns stuff is more lightweight, feels flimsy by comparison, and the trem stop seems to function on only about half of the MIJ/CIJ guitars I've played.  Keep in mind, if you're only used to playing the Jpns models, you'll probably not have much to complain about.  The casting/stamping is a lot cleaner on the US-made part, and there is definitely a heftier feel.  The AVRI is on the left, MIJ on the right in the pic below:


If you're comparing them side-by-side, there's a noticeable difference.  It really comes down to personal preference, but I'd replace the unit myself.

I feel more confident about doing it... but still a little bit afraid I must say so I think I'll try to sand the neck of my Schecter PT first to test the feel and if I like like I'll do it on my JM.

Hey Ohm-men and Pullover: have you noticed you have a lot of tastes in common concerning guitar set-up ?
You both sanded your neck and you both use the washer tip on the trem...

cmatthes: Do you notice any change of sound (unamped?) comparing the AVRI trem unit to the CIJ? I dont use my trem on my CIJ but im considering exchanging it anyway. Are they made of the same materials? If the avri is heavier that should theoretically end up with a little more sustain, but probably just in the ms range.
