new amp: 66' blackface super reverb. few Q's........

Post by gregovertone » Sun Jul 22, 2007 8:07 pm

i just got myself a vintage super reverb.
so far so good.
sounds killer....

a couple misc hums and so crackly pots.....getting there. i can handle that myself....

but it would seem like as though the Vibrato function is disconnected. the channel sounds great, but the trem isn't workin.

i plugged in a footswitch into the jack.....nothin. at all.

the reverb works.....as in, the footswitch jack controls it.

i have some pics.....in case you can see something i can't. i didn't see any broken traces, loose wires, or anything.....but i don't know what im looking for.

sorry---i'm a worse camera man than i am a tech.....amazingly.

well, some people mod them so the trem is out of the ckt for 'tone'. :-\    do you hear any change in sound at all when using the footsw. & the trem controls?

Fixed link.

Sweet looking amp. Congrats!

I'm no expert but I'd first check out the tube that drives it and make sure both halves of it are lighting up.

I'm pretty sure it's the marked one but I'd look at all of them.
Bigger in sum than parts.

interesting. i wonder if that is it. there was not tonal difference when i clicked the footswitch.

i'll also check the tube today.

i am really leaning towards the idea of it being modded. hopefully, it can be undone.

cl.
yea....i was pumped....

3 issues i can live with for now
- needs a top handle
- needs a footswitch
- this current trem issue

i have a few threads going on the topic of the trem on various forums.....i think i have roughly gathered what the issue is....i just need to bring it to a tech.

that's what i'm saying.

i didn't really have $2k to be spending, which is why i sold the klon, and i'm selling the echolution and all that other crap. i can always get those again.

cheap vintage gear.....you need to move on it if you see it...that's my motto.

both of them are project pieces, but they may end up being pretty cool.

Cool man. The trem was probably just dissconected.
Find a cheap amp tech to un-mod whatever was done and return it to BF specs which will cost about 5 bucks in parts and maybe 50$ labor. Thats the beauty of these vintage amps they are cheasy easy to mod/unmod.

Another thing about the trem these things are notoriously crappy and Ive heard great things about this thing:

http://www.tonecraftamprepair.com/html/surf_bug.html

That and an NOS pre-amp tube should make the trem sound amazing.

I'm actually going to go see Jon(owner of tonecraft amps & designer of the surfbug) sometime this week.  I snagged a SF Vibrolux Reverb of ebay last week and it's basically doing what your amp is - misc hums and crackly sounds.  The trem works but the reverb doesn't.  I opened it up and it looks like someone Blackfaced it already.  I'm going to run mine by Jon and let him take a look.  He can normally fix stuff while you wait provided he isn't slammed.

He's a really great guy(if maybe a little eccentric) with a ton of electronic repair expertise.  He is easily the best amp tech in the region and that's saying something in a town like this that revolves around it's live musicians.  Anyway, I would highly recommend doing business with him when you can - he's a stand up guy.  You can give him a call and he will talk your ear off about your amp or you can make a post over on the fenderforum.com in the vintage amp/repair areas of the site.  Jon posts there pretty frequently as "VintageJon"
"I enjoy the current state of offsetguitars hostility."

700?!?!?!?!  I payed 850 for my SF Twin!  Good buy, my friend.  I'm jealous...I have looked at the 65 RI's quite a bit, but I am still saving for another Jazzmaster... ::)
