Looking for advice on Epiphone hollowbodies...

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

Noel Gallagher's got practically every 335-style guitar known to man by now :D

Do those Man City Blue Supernovas really touch four figures in the US? Christ! I played one and thought it was OK but no better than my Dot of a similar age. I think the Supernovas were slightly smaller at the nut too than the usual 1.68" measurement.

Yeah, I've been watching the price over the past few months and all but one of them (which was missing parts) went well-over 1000.00 US. That's mostly Jacks... At least a couple were the Manchester Blue though...
One of the early black finished-models went for 1014 a few days back on ther UK site, which will probably end-up being a bargain in a few years for that (since those were very early models only)...

I think the trapezoid inlays play tricks on the eye so far as width...

The secret (imho) to all of the Epiphone hollows I've ever had in my hands was setup... Not just dropping the bridge, but really tweaking the rod, and getting to the 'sweet-spot' for your conditions... I don't think the factory spends a millisecond on this, except now maybe on the Elitist models...  The difference between blah and brilliant is in that ... I use 11's now on the 'nova, and keep the action pretty low (a little too low for really good bending, but unbelievably smooth for fast progression...), I had used 9's and a little detension before which was oddly great for bionic bending....

Have you checked out the Peavey JF-2?  They play really nice, and the mini humbuckers are sort of twangy, almost like a filtertron.  The Bigsbys work flawlessly, too.

Peavey page
Check out this vid too

I had a browse through Ebay and found the black Supernova you mentioned. I'm totally surprised as I really didn't think the Supernovas I tried were any better than my Dot. I suppose the Gallagher name adds a few bucks onto the price.

On the nut width issue, I was right, it is smaller than the Dot! http://www.gibson.com/products/epiphone ... etsn.shtml

You're right with the setup issues. I personally haven't bought a guitar I haven't had to set up for how I wanted it as I am particularly fussy over necks and measurements. I've had my Dot fret levelled, new bone nut and I play with 10s and she's absolutely fabulous. The Bare Knuckle pickup has topped her off now.

Hi!
I had a Gibson  ES-335 many moons ago and i regret selling it.
I played an Epiphone(70's Japan and not Korean) and it was cool(my choice).
Go with the Elistist Serie and you should be pleased.
Regards!
