I rewired the guitar to the Cobain diagram. It still wasn't working properly. After a bit more fiddling around, I discovered that the treble bleed capacitor in the switch control was touching up against the wall of the guitar cavity, which is painted with grounding paint. The only problem is the main tone volume. It cuts the volume when you turn it down slightly. Which means I really need to know what that resistor is? because I'm pretty sure that's the secret ingredient.
