Re: New j. Mascis 2011???
Finally got to play one in the store the other day, and it's all I can think about!! Cool axes here ladies and gents, as soon as I can scrape up the coinage will be posting a JMJM NGD. I really dug it, the fine folks @ Squier have really stepped it up of late. Rhis is a sweet guitar, color me obsessed!!

OT, but I spent some time in Bryan and College Station last year and I never saw anywhere downtown advertising bands. Is there a music scene there?redchapterjubilee wrote:OK, I FINALLY put my hands on one of these, though very briefly. My friend Jay Satellite played a show with my band last night and he played his Squier Mascismaster for about 1/3 of the set. It definitely sounded like a Jazzmaster in the center position. I played it for about five minutes before our sets and I'm amazed at how light it feels, how smooth the neck feels, how well it played (he hasn't had it set up yet...it was quite nice right out of the box!) and it has sealed things for me. At some point I will definitely buy one of these. Played better than either the Classic Player or Blacktop I've owned. That said, I will change out the pickguard. It looks more like butterscotch than gold to me. Here's Jay playing his last night. You can see my mint on white 94 MIJ across the room.

Re: New j. Mascis 2011???
Yes, there is! There are four different factions here: the 979Represent/Sinkhole Texas gang (basically my friends' bands) that are punk, noise, wierdo stoner metal, etc.; acoustic guitar-slinging singer-songwriters; post-hardcore blastbeat metal bands; and big red dirt Texas country scene. The good bands center around Revolution Cafe & Bar in downtown Bryan and the stuff for college kids centers around Northgate in College Station. Normally being around the college kids is where it's at, but Texas A&M University is the most conservative public school in the country so anything truly creative goes on away from the collegiate epicenter and is made by townies and the occasional A&M misfit. http://www.sinkholetexas.com is our record label, http://www.979represent.com is our magazine. In a way, being here, a good 90 minutes from Houston and two hours from Austin, it's just far enough away to do your own thing and support a small but vital scene. It's a lot like the '80s in that if you want something cool you have to make it from scratch.

Re: New j. Mascis 2011???
NGD for me...
sold my Jackson Stealth to get it (and I'm VERY happy about that, it just had got to go ) and bought it online...
my JMJM came today...
fantastic guitar, no doubt (I even like the pickguard, it's MUCH nicer than how it looks in pictures...
...but my new experience today has been a bit ruined by the pickup selector! out of the sealed box, it was just working bad... a few minutes later, it just broke down (I think it is now stuck in neck+bridge position)...
I don't want to return the guitar, it's good (well, except for the broken selector!)... what can I do?
is it Fender/Squier politic to send it back to 'em? will I unvoid warranties if I repair it by myself? will they repair it for me in a nearby repair shop (or whatever)?
I'm waiting for the seller's (shop) reply, but I would like some advices from you guys!

Re: New j. Mascis 2011???
I didn't have trouble with my selector, but I did buy a MIJ pawnshop mustang and the selector craps out all the time.
If you don't mind opening up the jazzmaster it's an easy fix if you have a soldering iron and a replacement switch. If that already sounds like too much work maybe just exchange the guitar. Yes a local shop should do it fairly cheaply as its an easy job.

Re: New j. Mascis 2011???
thanks for replying; I found out there are 2 repair shop not that far away from me that will do the work free of charge, since the guitar is cover by warranty... it's the best solution, just have to wait a week or so (easter holiday's arrived)...tantamo wrote:I didn't have trouble with my selector, but I did buy a MIJ pawnshop mustang and the selector craps out all the time.

Yep, my one cuts out occasionally, easy fix when I get around to it. I have already changed the lead circuit pots and cap as it was way too brittle for my old ears!anubi wrote:

And yes, I use flat 5ths and M/m7ths and the rhythm circuit alot, all of which this JM JM does without fault.
Nice..........

the pickup selector has been replaced for free (under warranty) by a guitar tech, anyway the switch is not the original one and the tip is black... well I guess it's no big deal... after all it match the color of the rhythm circuit...Jazzbow wrote:Yep, my one cuts out occasionally, easy fix when I get around to it. the tip of the switch can usually be screwed off. your old one will most likely fit!the pickup selector has been replaced for free (under warranty) by a guitar tech, anyway the switch is not the original one and the tip is black... well I guess it's no big deal... after all it match the color of the rhythm circuit...

yes, the tech tried that but it didn't fit... he said I could bring him the guitar back and get the original switch in a few days/weeks, but I think it's not gonna happen anymore... well, I can live with that!maximee wrote:the tip of the switch can usually be screwed off. your old one will most likely fit!the pickup selector has been replaced for free (under warranty) by a guitar tech, anyway the switch is not the original one and the tip is black... well I guess it's no big deal... after all it match the color of the rhythm circuit...

yeah i too wouldn't bother. you could also use some hot glue or super glue to permanently attach the old white tip to your new switch.

Re: New j. Mascis 2011???
Hi all,
just for the record, I post a (crappy cell phone) pic of my SQJMJM whom I put a Wilkinson roller bridge and an Avri tort guard on. It was a perfect fit for both, I have just sanded the bridge's holes on the guard a little to be able to lower the Wilkinson at its maximum since the original pickguard is thinner than the AVRI tort, who's 4 ply.
It's a really great guitar, I love the sound of the pickups, especially the neck one. It's holding the tuning just fine even with heavy tremolo use. Don't know if it's due to the roller bridge as I installed it right away before leaving the shop
