Changing the phase inverter changes the compression characteristics of the amp. Hence the increase in bass response.

I just switched my blues deluxe's stock groove tubes 12AX7 in V1 for a NOS RCA 12AX7 that was in my SF champ when I got it, and I'm really really impressed - there's less gain than before, but as a result there's so much more clarity and definition. When the drive's all the way up it's pretty much perfect for me. I love it! It's also a whole lot quieter now :D

That's a great  news!
As a poor student I can't rely on NOS tubes but I'm working on this side too!
Now I still have a 12AY7 in V3 and soon I'm going to put it in V2 and a 12AU7 in V3 so I'll be in the tweed territory on the dist channel and in the blackface zone on the clean channel..not the real thing but it should be very cool!

I put a 12AY7 in V2, and I have a 12AT7 for the Phase Inverter.  I haven't installed the AT7 yet.

I'm a poor ex-student and I can't rely on NOS tubes either, but I paid £50 for the Champ with a full set of old valves in it - the 70's RCA valve I put in was actually in better condition than the year-old one I had in the amp!

I haven't seen any hard evidence to prove NOS tubes are any different. I usually use regular old sovteks, if you get the military spec they are as good as anyone elses IMHO

Nope, me either - i know a lot of people pay lots of money for them, though. I just thought it was cool to have it in my amp, especially since it didn't cost me anything. Aside from any subjective tonal changes, it definitely made the amp less noisy, which I'm really happy about.
