What's the deal with the California series? We've had it in Australia for a few years but there's no info on the net about them at all, and the shops don't know anything either.

The specs go on to say that they are made of "soft maple" [I'm not sure what this is, but it is used in their Vintage 70s Jazz Bass, too - and those look cool], have a top-load bridge [I'm a fan of these as they add a percussiveness to my playing style], and "2 Ceramic Magnet Single-Coil Pickups with No Exposed Pole Pieces" [I don't know what this means, but it screams lo-fi cheap to me :) ... in the best case for me, these would be low output and prone to fizzle].

I wonder if this all adds up to a cool guitar that is a good/great platform for modding?

What is the general perspective on this series elsewhere in the world where they have already been released?

My Fender rep was just in last week telling me all about the new Fender/Squier stuff and he didn't mention anything about a California Series.  I sent him an e-mail and this is what he said:

"This is what I call a mystery product - I have no information on a California Series Squier line."

California Series is a mystery product. Nobody here has any information about them either, but they've been selling them for a while!

Yeah, I sold toenail clippings to them.  Apparently they use them for the inlays.

I just checked an Australian online guitar seller: Billy Hyde (I have no idea whether it is typical pricing or not).  Their California series Teles were $229AU while the Affinity series were $300AU.  Hmmm... I'm still interested in the CA series, but if they are almost 25% less expensive than Affinity series... I wonder what they are like.  Perhaps they are thin/slim bodied like the bullet series.  Hmmm.... again.
