Double Six, Double Six, Double Six

Post by echobaseone » Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:00 am

By Burns of London...Does anyone here have one? Electric XIIs are shooting well beyond my price range, but I'm kinda gassing for a 12string. Thought about putting together a USACG/Warmoth XII approximate (JM Body/Generic 12 String Neck), but the hardware isn't going to be anything like a XII, especially the bridge  :(.
The Strat XII looks, well, like a Strat, but there's something charming about the Burns.
Any and all opinions welcome. Thanks folks.

Don't know about the Double Six, but I've got a Bison, and it's a fantastic guitar. ;)

Owner of trouble, flesh, blood, and bricks
Are you thinking of a RI or a vintage one? Vintage Burns are still relatively cheap compared to other vintage stuff, but unfortunately the Double Six (along with the Hank Marvin) seems to be the priciest of the old ones.

I have a Vistasonic bass from sometime in the 60s .. it's quirky but definitely playable, so that's what I'd expect of an old Double Six. Good enough for MWP, good enough for anyone!

Mezcalhead, I knew if anyone was going to get the subject line, it'd be you!
I was thinking of the RI, as finding a vintage Burns in the US is pretty unlikely...if I WAS going down the vintage UK route, I'd be scouring the planet for a Shergold Custom Masquerader XII! But, the few reviews I've found on the Double Six RI's have been favorable. Now to track one down to play!
Thanks to both of you for the input. Gordon, was your Bison a reissue?

Well thanks guys...Mez, that pic of MWP put the nail in the coffin...god, I'm such a fanboy! :D
Unless Fender put out a XII Reissue in the next few months, my decision is MADE!

i was a burns/baldwin fanboy for a long time before i actually played one (had to go all the way to london for it!)

i've got a baldwin bison bass that i love for sheer versitality.  but just beware the double sixes (and all the burns/baldwins) tend to have HUGE wide necks. pretty much the opposite of a fender electric XII.  the fenders tend to be thin and fit your hand a bit better.  the only one that's thinner are the 60s rickenbackers which pack so many strings in such a small space i'm always amazed anyone can get around them.  someday i really want to build a fender XII with the string order of a rick which IMHO would be the bees knees...

here's my bison:

Yeah, that would be great .. I much prefer the thicker strings above the thinner one in the pair.

My Vistasonic, since we're doing bass pics:

Even the Korean RIs are semi hard to find! Not that it matters that much, I'm beginning to waver. I'm considering buying the Lake Placid Blue Strat XII, and then getting a USACG Jazzymaster Body routed for 2x Jag PUs. The bridge on the Strat XII looks fairly clever. 6 thru the bridge and 6 thru the body. Plus tuning pegs and matching headstock...I really just want to record with it, but strats give me the willies.
Bah, this could go on forever. Good thing I don't have any money to burn at the minute!

I'm pretty sure the bridge is a Gotoh 12.
