Fender XII 1966 sunburst, tort
I never thought I would ever have one of these in my possession!
Just needs a slight setup.
It's all original and in excellent condition.
These necks are way fatter than I expected.
I wish I had access to this guitar when I was making hockey stick necks for people.

Looks great. That clean, subtle, 3-tone sunburst is so cool!

Dots and no binding. That makes it a pretty early one, right?

I have a partscaster xii, I posted a topic awhile ago showing it off, but I love it. I'm sure you love yours too.

Pretty sure this is a 66 or maybe 67.CROSS_guitars wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 6:38 amI'm about to pop the neck off and find out.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 5:40 amDots and no binding. That makes it a pretty early one, right?

F tuners started in Jan 66.
Sunburst are mainly dots no binding. At least I have never seen a picture of a sunburst block-binding.
Blocks and binding, again from the pictures i have seen are mainly linked to custom colors or necks reused for sunburst mavericks Or shenandoahs

Ah, interesting, so binding was part of the upgrade package with a custom color?
I always assumed the XII followed the same progression of early CBS JMs and Jags having dots (and binding) before switching to blocks (and binding).
Are all XIIs considered “post CBS”? Was the model something that was in development prior to the takeover?

The xii was developed and designed by Leo fender before the take over already but first production xii was released mid 65.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 10:27 amAh, interesting, so binding was part of the upgrade package with a custom color?

I don’t think blocks and binding was particularly linked to custom colors, but I only see them coming on custom colors xii. (I just checked google and I found one lefty and 1 normal sb blocks and binding, but I guess there are the exception on the rule)
Also the fender xii didn’t last very long. Already stopped in 68. Unused stock from the xii and other guitars where then used to build the maverick starting in 69

Kind of the same deal with the Mustang, I THINK the Bronco and, tho it wasn’t Leo who designed it, the Coronado, yeah? I think a lot about like, what Leo would have come up with had CBS insisted he stay on in the same capacity as before they bought the company. He worked as a consultant for the rest of the 60s there but we see a clear and sharp drop off in him really doing anything from like, 1965-him leaving. Maybe those early Music Man guitars end up as Fender designs but I dunno - those guitars, while being an obvious kind of Fender thing in their own right, at the same time weren’t? Not sure how to explain what I mean, but in my dreams they finish the Marauder v2 and it goes down with Jaguars and Jazzmasters as the least desirable of the three and I’m buying them for like $1,000 today.kapepper wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 10:37 amThe xii was developed and designed by Leo fender before the take over already but first production xii was released mid 65.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat May 04, 2019 10:27 amAh, interesting, so binding was part of the upgrade package with a custom color?

I guess it could have gone the other way and him and George end up with a really nasty LSD habit and Leo starts insisting that they drop paint in favor of neon shag carpeting for their finishing material because he swears it gives the amplified signal the most direct and clean path and a lot of us don’t even know what a Fender is because by 1970 the company was dead and buried and Gibson owns it only to keep it dead before reviving it on the 50th anniversary of Jimi’s Death to release a tribute Strat that’s quality-wise on-par with that Firebird 0 thing they did.
