Metalcast pics:

The snare drum on the left has yellow metalcast over a marble effect over metallic gold. (The other 3 do not have anything (bar clear) over the metallic paints)

Various layers of metalcast red, purple, blue, orange over a silver sparkle.

Green metalcast over the original antigua burst finish body and pickguard, and also on the chrome parts. Pickup covers have green metalcast over a solid brunswick green. The paint is not as durable on the chrome as Duplicolor products advertise, as seen on the output jack connection.

Green metalcast over glitter (spray paint, not flakes) over solid green.

Green metalcast over the original mystic seafoam, with mystic seafoam on the right to compare.

Green metalcast over vespers blue metallic, with sherwood green on the right to compare.

Beware, sometimes you get a can that just spits out coloured dust powder, making a mess everywhere. Like when someone breaks a toner cartridge for a laser printer.

Wow, thats a really interesting color given the combo. Almost Oxblood. Im interested in how each coat layers on top of each other, and if they get darker or just more opaque.

If I spray red metalcast over this LPB tele body do you think I could get a decent purple if I only do a few coats? Would the color be really dark?

Who can say... I find it unpredictable. It will certainly be some version of purple, but as to what shades you get, you'd just have to find out! You'd need a few coats to get proper even coverage, unless you are an ace with spray paint. The more coats, the deeper (more 3d) and redder it will get. It might get darker as you go too. (I expect the white binding to end up pastel pink.) It may also just end up horrible, and simply go reddish brown.

What clear coat did you use over the metalcast? 2k?

I may hold off on red over LPB the more I think about it, but if I can get a cheap silver sparkle body I may mess around with the metalcast blue or purple...

The Jazzmaster, Jazz copy and maybe red drum were sprayed with Dulux "Duramax" 2k cans while it was still available years ago. 2k clear in spray cans is very hard to get hold of around here, so I for the later projects I used a Feast Watson wipe-on poly. So the Toronado, Cyclone, and most of the snare drums (not sure about the reddish one).

Does anyone know if there is a clear coat that will weather check? Weather on it's own or if purposely induced?
Nitorlack has two lines of nitro with little (golden age) to almost no (relic) plasticizer. In cans and spraycans.

I've used minwax, mohawk, and rustolem clear and all mine have checked after a year or so.

Yeah, I'm getting that sense. I'm going to be boring and get something similar to LPB, but having a smattering of random car colors available is really interesting and tempting. I kinda thought about taking the mint guard I bought out on the street, holding it up to random cars to see how it looks, then googling that car's color!
I've never been able to find any color charts. If you're looking for a LPB lookalike though, you want Bahama Blue. I used that on the headstock below to match a vintage Fernandes body.

Hi, Im not in the market for that perfect LPB for my Jag. Do you have more pictures of the Bahama blue? Thanks.

Ice Blue Metallic
This is absolutely gorgeous and almost looks like a early 60s vintage lake placid blue. Now is this paint a Duplicolor paint can or something else? Which exact paint number did you go with and if you have more pictures in different lighting, I would love to see it. Thanks.

Forgot to ask when you originally mentioned this, but is there anything in particular you had to do to prep a project for a wipe-on poly clear coat finish over metallic duplicolor? Any specific kind of Poly to use (or avoid) for this method?

I've done wipe on finished over natural woods but never considered it for painted projects, esp metallics. But now that its getting colder and can't spray as easily, a wipe on clear coat process sounds a lot more manageable, especially if I want to add tint for an aged/yellowed look.

I didn't do anything different with the preparation. Just ensure the metallic paint is fully dry and set before you apply the clear, and don't sand until you have a few coats done.

Wipe-on poly for guitar is little different from 2K spray. Lots of thin coats, don't let it run, avoid cold or wet conditions, keep dust away, ventilate & wear a mask. Don't sand through! Unlike timber projects, painted guitars are less forgiveable when it comes to applying cleanly.

Only thing that's different is the higher fire hazard, and also the lack of overspray issues.

Interesting. Is it safe do apply indoors (in a well ventilated area), if I do one coat every 6 hours or so ? I don't mind taking a long time to get it done to keep it safe, and ensure cure time. I just know by the time I get to a project like that it will be too cold to do any of this stuff outside.

I've been doing necks with wipe on poly, and adding maize mixol pigment to the can to get a nice amber poly finish for cheap, really like the results but struggle to keep dust away in between coats while working in an open garage. Never had dust issues like this using sprays, but it's a lot more manageable and easier to control than spraying, even if it takes a lot longer.

Keep everyone out of that room until it's finished, and send the fumes outside instead of into the rest of the house. The smell will still persist. And make sure the used cloths are disposed of safely - they can spontaneously combust.

But mostly just follow the product's instructions.
