[quote="wardpike"]Hey, you wrote "Sorry, couldn't resist".

Oh dear, still it is a pretty orgasmic neck :) (No pun intended, much). I meant to say how much I like that Porche Green. reminds me of the '60's Humbrol Enamel colours, will look even better with some of that metalflake you mentioned which will liven it up a bit. But a seriously green, green. That headstock contours come out pretty well too, I do like these as an alternative take on it :) .

Can you carve a contour around the forearm relief part of the body that mimics the headstock contour groove? But put the green in the headstock contour and have plain wood in the body contour? Because that would be THE TITS!! And it's never been done, AFAIK.

Sometimes there's a reason why things have never been done...

Hey Ben, how did you bevel the fret slot edges before you pressed the frets in? I went back and looked, but couldn't see anywhere that you discussed this.

D'you know what? I clean forgot to do it. I did it on the JM neck just with a triangular needle file with a square tip (ie. not pointy), but then when I did this one I didn't remember until I was most of the way through. With the glue lubricating the slots there was no issue getting them to sit nicely for the press, which is usually what reminds me to do it. I figure the chances of me ever having to re-fret this neck are pretty slim, so I guess it's not really an issue.

Well spotted, though! :jacked:

My gawd those necks tuned out nice! :-*
You are really stepping up each new project, Ben. Very impressive.

I've Been looking at one of those fret end bevel files on stewmac, but making your own is much cooler (I'm not sure I'm that skilled...). Also that tang nipper is interesting. Pretty expensive though.
:)

BTW - I copied your block marker jig today... ;D
Someone knows where I can find the nearest woodchipper to throw my pieces of junk into?

So:

Dressing the frets late at night on the kitchen worktop (while the wife was out, obviously  )

Image

Drilling the neck holes:

Drilling the tuner holes - 10mm for F-tuners

Missing from here is me realising the headstock was too thick for the tuners I have (was 16mm, needed to be about 14.5). I worked it down on my drum sander, then finished it off by hand and re-defined the swooshy bit.

And then...three hours of hoovering and blowing and hoovering again (yeah Zeke, I said 'blowing' ::) ) before I could get my compressor out and make a start on this:

Image

I'm not really sure what I think about it. I added a cap-full of .004 silver flake to the green and did a couple of coats with that, then did another couple of coats with the green mixed 50/50 with amber clear. It looks ok, but it's pretty much the colour of my kids' school uniform, and I'm not too sure about the size of the flake. I have some smaller flake, and some white pigment (thanks John!) so I suspect this might come off tomorrow and be replaced with something a little lighter and more subtle.

I found an old can of sherwood green from when I did the Buickmaster and managed to just squeeze enough out to do the headstock of the JM neck, too.

Cheers Jerker.

If you can wait until I'm done with the spraying I'll make you one of those files - honestly, it only took ten minutes and the cost of the file itself is negligible.

The tang nipper is more than I thought. I'm really grateful to John for lending it to me - I've always done it by hand in the past, which is fine, but takes an age. Actually I was a bit sloppy with it this time - there are a couple where the remains of the tang are still visible where I should have just taken a file to the underside.

Good luck with the inlay jig!

Oh - that would be really cool if you could - I'll gladly pay you for the trouble! Of course I can wait.

That green looks pretty cool, it will soften up a little with some lacquer build coats. But I guess "nearly there" is not there in your dictionary Ben. It may look better in a smaller flake with a tad of white to soften the shade a bit, I'm not helping much am I. :( Your call wether to rub it down again tho' seems a shame thought.
