Should I buy a '67 SG special for $1600?

For guitars of the straight waisted variety (or reverse offset).

that's the SG-shaped Guilds from the 70s, right? also known as Polara, and made famous by Kim Thayl (sp?) of soundgarden. great guits, and getting WAY up there ($) with the "real" gibbys.
congrats, let's see some pics!

Yeah, that's the model - no bigsby on mine but otherwise identical. my roommate's camera has just died, again, but let me see if the pics from the guy's old ebay auction work:

The '67 SG Special could be a cool guitar.  But don't forget, Gibson makes two not-at-all-well-advertised p-90 equipped SGs right now.  The SG Classic is only available via GC/MF:

And an upcoming Gibson Guitar of the Week is a reissue of the 67 SG Special:
http://www.zzounds.com/item--GIBSG67

Both have stopbar tailpieces instead of wraparounds or vibrolas (which were the choice on the originals, I think), but they look to be cool; and modding to a wraparound requires about $30 and 30seconds and doesn't permanently alter the guitar at all.  I own an SG Classic and it is a top notch guitar - it is very light and resonant and sounds and plays great.

For just a bit more $$ the 67 reissue comes with an HSC and has the batwing guard... mmm.... batwing.

That said, neither will be quite the same as a nice vintage one, of course.

The big one by the bridge is the pickup selector; and the little one is either a phase reverse, coil tap, or coil split switch... I can't remember which, though.

yeah part of my reasoning for going with the S-100 is that for the same price as the 67 sg I can get the S-100 and a SG Classic. Snap, that 67 reissue looks sweet! didn't even know about that.
